The presence of LGBT students on campus is obviously ubiquitous, but I think straight students remain unaware of the gay dating world by getting wrapped up in their own melodramas and romances. BU sophomore Ben Timmins has had experience with gay blind-dating: he hooked up and dated a guy that he met through another friend during his freshman year at college. Unfortunately, one of the troubles in the LGBT dating world is knowing exactly who is straight, bi, or gay — a prevailing theme which all of my sources lamented. Since people take offense if you think they are gay because of the negative connotation in society, the only way to find out is if girl friends tell you their status. Even though BU is known for hosting many gay students, the large campus actually hinders the ability to meet guys romantically, Timmins said. That attitude is definitely rampant.

In a Starbucks on the Boston University campus, Dave Griffin sat down with an acquaintance from his hometown of Duxbury. Griffin placed two coffees and two croissants on the table. Griffin and his date caught up on how freshman year had been, the conversation tinged with awkwardness, until they reached the minute time limit. Before they parted ways, he invited her on a second date.

Unknown to his companion, Griffin had invited her for coffee as part of an assignment for a Boston College class whose instructor, Kerry Cronin, gives extra credit to any student who will go on a date. The reason? This is a generation that has grown up with relatively low expectations in the realm of happily every after. Theirs is a world where most embrace group activities, punctuated with the periodic hookup, and communicate largely in digital bursts of characters instead of in person.

Cronin says this all came together for her during a lecture she gave about the campus hookup culture eight years ago. That year, Cronin gave the option of going on a date to students in a seminar she taught to juniors and seniors that examined relationships, spirituality, and personal development. Only one of the 15 students did. The next semester, she made the assignment mandatory, and some students began choosing the course specifically for that reason, saying they had trouble asking people out on dates on their own.

Cronin is associate director of the Lonergan Institute, a philosophy research center at Boston College.

Underage drinking and adolescent dating abuse are significant and related public health problems. The frequency of alcohol use is one of the strongest correlates of adolescent dating abuse perpetration. Information about the mechanisms that mediate the relationship between alcohol use and abuse perpetration is needed, as are cost-effective interventions with high-risk youth. The nonscientific survey, which asked about such things as what constitutes a date and the usefulness of social media, tells us much about the dating preferences of students on the Charles River Campus. Looks are less important than personality, a group date is not a real date, and online dating sites are creepy. College, it turns out, also happens to be a wake-up call: Curiously, the survey shows that the generation that studies, plays, and meets online has the best luck meeting love interests the old-fashioned way: through friends, around campus, in classes, and at parties.

The preferred method of asking or being asked out is in person, by a wide margin. And what, exactly, is a date these days? Is it hanging out together?

Gina said she first met up with a man in his 40s who works in tech, who she found through SeekingArrangement. Their first date seemed almost normal to her — they went to a coffee shop and had polite conversation. Then he paid for her drink, as well as her company. Her relationship with this man eventually became intimate.
